The next morning, I woke up early and felt a wash of feelings. Emotions I couldn’t explain and didn’t understand flowed through me and I knew I had to get home. Dressing quickly, I made my way to the front door of the apartment building and paused. Leaning against the small mailboxes, I pulled out my phone and sent a quick text to Yazmin thanking her for a great night but explaining I had to get home. I then called Sarah.

“Heya, Jade. It’s barely seven in the morning here. Why are you calling me?”

“I don’t know. I need advice, I’m feeling—” What was the word for the tsunami of emotions? I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to think.

“Honey, what’s up?”

One of the tiny mailboxes dug into my back, so I pushed off and started to pace. “I don’t know what I’m doing and it’s too early.” In a rush of words, I told her my situation.

“Are you still at her apartment building?” Concern flowed to me with her words, warming me.

“Yeah, I was about to walk back to the dorms, but haven’t left yet.”

There was a sigh on the other end. “Call Bevin. You know the rules, and you know why they are there.”

“But…”

“No buts.”

“It’s just after five, he’ll be asleep.”

“Call him.”

Grr. “Fine.”

I hung up and made the call. He didn’t answer. I tried again. Voice mail. I banged my head against the wall snarling at the small vestibule. I knew I could safely make it home; this was ridiculous. I debated just walking home and saying screw it.

One other option was open to me: I could use our mental connection. If I left now and didn’t try it, even if I made it home safely, people would be upset, and hurt. My paranoia winning out, I found Bevin’s mental cord and gave it a yank.

Bevin, you up?

His groggy grunt was all I got for several beats. “Not really, it’s early. What’s up?”

I’m…I’m not at home and about to take the walk of shame. It’s a bit over a mile.

A shot of alpha blazed through the connection with the single word. “No.” It took a bit longer for anything more to come through. “Okay, I’m up. Where are you?”

Head hurting from his mental exertion, I gave him the information and was about to disconnect when he told me to stay connected. “Just…it’s early. Keep me up until I get there.”

You’re drinking Oscar’s coffee and you get up this early often enough I know you’re awake.

He snorted. “Humor me, okay.”

I’m not going to slip off and leave if the connection is dropped. I woke you up, didn’t I? There was no reaction. Fine. I knew I sounded like a petulant child, but keeping the connection open gave me a headache.

It didn’t take long for him to pull up. When he did, I climbed into the passenger seat. “I need to call Sarah back, I’ll put it on speaker.” It didn’t take long to get her on the line. “Okay, we’re in the car and Bevin’s taking me back to the dorms.
